What the WebP to PNG Converter Does

WebP is excellent for the web but still is not accepted everywhere — some older apps, editors, and upload forms only take PNG or JPEG. This tool turns a WebP into a PNG that virtually any program opens, keeping the image intact.

Transparency comes along for the ride. If the WebP has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it, so cut-out graphics and logos stay see-through. The cost is a bigger file, since PNG's lossless compression is less compact than WebP's.

How It Works

The browser decodes the WebP natively — every current browser can read WebP — and draws it onto an HTML5 canvas at full size, alpha channel included.

The canvas is exported as a PNG, which is lossless, so the pixels are stored exactly. You download a .png with the same dimensions and base filename as the WebP.

Processing pipeline

1. Step 1. Drop in a WebP (any common image works). It is decoded locally — never uploaded.
2. Step 2. A canvas is created at the image's exact size, preserving any transparency.
3. Step 3. The image is drawn onto the canvas and encoded as a lossless PNG.
4. Step 4. Every pixel — colour and alpha — is stored exactly as decoded.
5. Step 5. The .png downloads with your original filename; dimensions are unchanged.

Privacy

The WebP is converted entirely on your device — decoded and re-encoded in the page's memory, with the PNG produced locally. No upload, no server copy.

Nothing is stored and there is no account. Close the tab and both images leave memory, so it is fine for private or proprietary graphics.

Accuracy & Limitations

The PNG is a lossless copy of the decoded WebP, so the picture looks the same. Note that if the source was a lossy WebP, the PNG faithfully preserves that already-compressed result — it cannot recover detail the lossy WebP discarded.

Files get bigger. PNG is typically larger than the WebP it came from — Google measures lossless WebP as around 26% smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP far smaller — so expect the PNG to grow, especially for photographic content.

Transparency is preserved. A WebP alpha channel is drawn onto the canvas and stored in the PNG, so see-through areas stay see-through.

Dimensions are unchanged and nothing is resized. Conversion runs in browser memory, so very large images use more of it but typical graphics convert instantly.

Real-World Use Cases

When to use it — and when not to

If small size is the goal and the destination supports it, keep the WebP; convert to JPG only if you do not need transparency and want a smaller photo file.
