What the EXIF Data Remover Does

Every photo your phone or camera takes carries hidden metadata — most importantly the GPS coordinates of where it was shot, plus the camera model, settings, and the exact date and time. This tool removes all of it, giving you a clean image safe to share.

It does this by drawing the picture onto a canvas and saving it again. The canvas holds only pixels, so when the new file is written, none of the original tags come with it. The image content looks the same; the hidden data is gone.

How It Works

Drop or pick a JPG or PNG. It is decoded and drawn onto a canvas in your browser.

Because a canvas stores only raw pixels, re-encoding it produces a file with no EXIF, GPS, IPTC or XMP metadata. The format is kept: a PNG is saved lossless, a JPG at high quality (0.95).

Download the clean copy. Nothing about the image — pixels or metadata — is ever uploaded.

Processing pipeline

1. Decode locally. Your JPG or PNG is read and decoded into pixels in the browser — never uploaded.
2. Draw to a clean canvas. The pixels are painted onto a canvas, which holds image data only and carries none of the original tags.
3. Re-encode without metadata. The canvas is saved in the same format — PNG losslessly, JPG at quality 0.95 — so the new file has no metadata.
4. Download the clean copy. You get a metadata-free version with the same pixels and format as the original.

Privacy

This is a privacy tool, and it respects your privacy completely: the image is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded. Many EXIF removers send your photo to a server to strip it — this one does not.

It removes the metadata that matters most: GPS latitude and longitude (often accurate to a few metres), the camera or phone model, the capture date and time, and any IPTC or XMP tags.

Because the work is local, there is no server log, no temporary copy and no account. The clean image exists only on your device.

Accuracy & Limitations

Re-encoding through a canvas removes everything the file carried beyond pixels — EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, and even the embedded ICC colour profile. For ordinary sRGB photos that profile change is invisible; for wide-gamut images colours could shift very slightly.

For a PNG the pixels are preserved exactly (PNG is lossless). For a JPG the image is re-encoded at quality 0.95, which is near-lossless but not bit-identical to the original — a tiny, practical trade-off for a simple, reliable strip.

It accepts JPG and PNG. Other formats are not handled here.

Social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and X usually strip EXIF on upload, but policies vary and direct file shares (email, messaging, cloud links) do not. Removing it yourself before sharing is the safe habit.
