What the EMI Calculator Does

Before you commit to a loan, the real question is what it costs each month and overall. This calculator turns three inputs — amount, interest rate, and tenure — into the monthly EMI plus the total interest and total payment, so the full price of borrowing is in front of you.

It uses the reducing-balance method that banks actually use for home, car, and personal loans: interest is charged on the outstanding principal, which falls as you repay. Early instalments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal — but the monthly amount stays the same.

How It Works

The annual interest rate is converted to a monthly rate (divided by 12 and by 100), and the tenure in years is converted to a number of months. Those feed the standard EMI formula, which solves for the fixed monthly payment that clears the loan exactly over the term.

From that monthly figure, the tool multiplies by the number of months to get the total payment, and subtracts the principal to show the total interest. Change any input and all three numbers update instantly.

  1. Step 1. Enter the loan amount, annual interest rate (%), and tenure in years.
  2. Step 2. The rate becomes a monthly rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and the tenure becomes months (years × 12).
  3. Step 3. The reducing-balance EMI formula solves for the fixed monthly payment.
  4. Step 4. Total payment = EMI × months; total interest = total payment − principal.
  5. Step 5. All three results update live as you change any input.

Worked examples
P = 10,00,000 · r = 8.5% ÷ 12 · n = 240 months
→ about ₹8,677 a month, and roughly ₹10.82 lakh of total interest

P = principal, r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = number of months (years × 12). If the rate is zero, EMI is simply P ÷ n.

Assumptions

  • The interest rate is fixed for the entire tenure — the figure does not change as a floating rate would.
  • Interest is charged monthly on the reducing balance, with an equal payment (EMI) each month.
  • Tenure is whole years converted to months; the first payment falls one month after disbursal.
  • Processing fees, insurance, prepayments, late fees, and taxes are not included.
  • Amounts are shown in rupees, but the formula is currency-agnostic — read ₹ as any currency.

Accuracy & Limitations

The EMI itself is exact for the inputs you give — it is the closed-form amortisation formula, the same one lenders use. Real-world differences come from the inputs, not the maths: a lender's quoted rate, fees, and rounding of the final instalment can shift the headline number slightly.

It models a fixed rate. For a floating-rate loan, the EMI (or the tenure) changes whenever the rate resets, so treat the result as a snapshot at today's rate.

Total interest assumes you run the loan to full term with no prepayments. Paying extra early cuts interest sharply, because it attacks the principal that all future interest is charged on — this tool does not model that.

Costs beyond principal and interest — processing fees, insurance, GST on charges — are not included, so the true cost of credit (APR) can be a little higher than shown.

No. It calculates principal and interest only. Fees, insurance, and taxes add to the real cost of the loan, so the lender's all-in APR can be a little higher.
Can I use it for a floating-rate loan?
As a snapshot, yes — it shows the EMI at the rate you enter. But when a floating rate resets, the EMI or the tenure changes, so re-run it with the new rate.
What if the interest rate is 0?
Then there is no interest, and the EMI is simply the loan amount divided by the number of months. The tool handles that case directly.
How would prepaying change things?
Prepaying reduces the principal that future interest is charged on, so it can cut your total interest substantially — more than people expect. This calculator assumes no prepayments, so treat its total interest as the no-prepayment case.
Is it only for rupees?
The ₹ symbol is just the display. The formula does not care about currency, so the EMI and totals are correct for any currency — read the numbers in whatever you are borrowing in.
