Age on a cut-off date: how forms in India count your age

Every exam and admission form asks your age "as on" some date, and a single day can decide whether the form is accepted. The arithmetic is easy. The catch is in how the notice words it.

Quick answer

Enter your date of birth and the cut-off date the notice gives (1 August 2026 for UPSC CSE and SSC CGL 2026, 31 March for KVS admissions). The calculator gives years, months and days on that date. Then check your birth date against the "born not earlier than … and not later than …" dates printed in the notice. Those printed dates decide, and both ends count.

The decision: work out your age for a form yourself?

Do it yourself

Yes, for any form that names a cut-off date: exam notices, school admissions, voter registration, a minor's passport. You need your date of birth as printed on your Class 10 certificate, and the notice.

Skip the arithmetic

If the notice prints born-between dates and your birth date is clearly inside or outside them, you already have the answer. The calculator only matters near an edge.

Get help

Ask the office that issued the notice if your birthday is 29 February, if your certificates show different dates of birth, or if you rely on a category relaxation. Those cases turn on the issuing body's reading, not on arithmetic.

The steps, in order

1Cut-off date2Born-betweendates3Exact age4Check edges5Day-before rule6Fill the form
  1. Find the cut-off date in the notice

    Have ready:the official notice (PDF)its age-limit paragraph

It is usually in the age-limit paragraph. UPSC CSE 2026: candidates "must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August, 2026". SSC calls it "the crucial date for age reckoning", fixed as 01-08-2026 in the CHSL 2026 notice.

  2. Find the born-between dates

Have ready:the same paragraphyour category, if a relaxation applies

Most central notices print them next to the age. UPSC CSE 2026: born "not earlier than 2nd August, 1994 and not later than 1st August, 2005". SSC CGL 2026, for the 18-27 posts: born not earlier than 02-08-1999 and not later than 01-08-2008. If your birth date falls on either printed date, you are inside.

  3. Work out your exact age on that date

Have ready:date of birth from the Class 10 certificatethe cut-off date

Enter both dates in the age calculator, and add the born-between dates if the notice prints them. Someone born on 15 August 2001 is 24 years, 11 months and 17 days old on 1 August 2026.

    Open the Age Calculator

  4. Check the edges

Have ready:your result from step 3the printed dates

If your birthday is within a day or two of the cut-off, look closely. Born 2 August 1994: 31 years, 11 months and 30 days on 1 August 2026, inside the UPSC window. Born 1 August 1994: exactly 32 on 1 August 2026, and outside, because the notice starts the window at 2 August 1994.

  5. Know the day-before-your-birthday rule

    Have ready:the notice's exact words

Two official texts describe the same moment in different words. The Majority Act, 1875 says a person attains majority "at the beginning of the eighteenth anniversary" of the day of birth. The Supreme Court, quoted by CBDT Circular 28/2016, puts it as attaining the age "on the day preceding" the birthday. That is why a child born on 1 April can count as 6 on 31 March. Plain subtraction says 5 years, 11 months and 30 days; the KVS guidelines for 2026-27 say "Child born on 1st April should also be considered" for Class I.

  6. Write the answer on the form the way it asks

Have ready:the forma printout of your calculation

Some forms want only the date of birth. Some want age in years, months and days as on the cut-off. Copy the format exactly, and keep a printout of the calculation with the notice's page number in your file.

One day apart: three children and KVS Class I for 2026-27. Age as on 31 March 2026. Plain subtraction puts the 1 April child one day short of 6, but the KVS guidelines say a child born on 1 April should also be considered.
The voter year has four qualifying dates1 Jan1 Apr1 Jul1 OctTurns 18 on 20 May 2026next qualifying date: 1 Jul 20262026
The voter year has four qualifying dates. Since the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, you can be enrolled once you are 18 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October. Someone who turns 18 on 20 May 2026 qualifies from 1 July 2026, and could apply in advance at 17.

What goes wrong

You use today's dateThe form asks your age on the cut-off date, not on the day you apply. Set the cut-off date in the calculator before you read the answer.
You trust "age 18-27" without the datesThe born-between dates are exact; the age words are a summary. Check your birth date against the dates.
Your child was born on 1 AprilPlain age calculators say 5 years 11 months 30 days on 31 March. KVS counts that child for Class I. Read the rule before you give up a year.
You open last year's noticeSSC serves the same CGL file under its 2025 and 2026 names. Check the year printed inside the PDF, not the file name.
You were born on 29 FebruaryWe found no official Indian rule for the birthday in a non-leap year. Our tool treats it as 28 February; if you are at an edge, ask the issuing office.

Variants: what changes the steps

School admission (KVS)

Age as on 31 March of the year admission is sought. Class I: 6 years but less than 8, and a child born on 1 April is also considered. Other schools and state boards set their own date, so read their circular.

Voter registration

You must be at least 18 on a qualifying date: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October. ECI lets 17-year-olds apply in advance. Born on 20 May 2008? You turn 18 on 20 May 2026, so the next qualifying date is 1 July 2026.

Passport for a minor

The instruction booklet treats under-18s as minors. Under 15, leave "Validity Required" blank; the passport runs five years or until 18, whichever comes first. Between 15 and 18 you can choose a 10-year passport.

Exam limits and relaxations

Category relaxations move the oldest allowed date. For exam-by-exam limits with relaxations, use CorrectForm's age-limit calculator.

Tips and tricks

  • Copy the born-between dates onto a sticky note. They are the test your form is checked against.
  • Count both ends. "Not earlier than 2 August 1994 and not later than 1 August 2005" includes both dates.
  • Use the date on your Class 10 certificate, not the one your family celebrates. A one-day difference between the two is common.
  • Born on 1 April or 1 August? Read the notice twice. Those are the days where plain arithmetic and the official reading come apart.
  • Write the notice name and page number next to your printout, for example "UPSC CSE 2026 notice, p.12".

What we would do

We would open the notice, find the age paragraph and copy the cut-off date and the born-between dates. Then we would put the date of birth from the Class 10 certificate into the calculator with that cut-off date and the two printed dates. If you are more than a week from either edge, you are done. If you are within a week, re-read the notice's exact words and keep a copy of that page with the form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my age on a specific date?
Enter your date of birth and the date the form names. The calculator counts full years, then months, then days. Born 15 August 2001, on 1 August 2026: 24 years, 11 months, 17 days.
Is my age counted on my birthday or the day before?
The Majority Act says you attain an age at the very beginning of your birthday. The Supreme Court, quoted in CBDT Circular 28/2016, says on the day before it. For exams, the born-between dates in the notice settle it.
My child was born on 1 April. Is the child 6 on 31 March?
For KVS Class I, yes: the 2026-27 guidelines say a child born on 1 April should also be considered. Plain subtraction gives 5 years, 11 months and 30 days.
What is the cut-off date for UPSC CSE 2026?
1 August 2026. You must be born between 2 August 1994 and 1 August 2005, both dates included, before any relaxation.
When can I register as a voter after turning 18?
On the next qualifying date: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October. You can apply in advance from 17.
How do leap-day birthdays work?
We found no official Indian rule. Our calculator treats 28 February as the birthday in non-leap years; some other calculators wait until 1 March, so results can differ by a day. If a form depends on it, ask the issuing office.
