What the Age Calculator Does

Subtracting dates in your head is fiddly because months have different lengths and leap years get in the way. This tool does it precisely: pick a birth date and a target date and it returns the age as years, months, and days, the way people normally say it.

It also gives the raw totals — how many whole days and hours separate the two dates — which is handy for milestones, eligibility checks, or simple curiosity. The target date defaults to today but can be any date, past or future.

How It Works

It works down from years to days. It subtracts the birth year, month, and day from the target's; if the day comes out negative it borrows the number of days in the previous month, and if the month then comes out negative it borrows twelve months from the year. That borrow logic is exactly how a calendar age is counted.

Separately, it takes the plain difference between the two dates in days (and multiplies by 24 for hours), which naturally includes every leap day in the span. Change either date and all the figures refresh instantly.

Methodology

1. Step 1. Pick a date of birth, and a target date (it defaults to today).
2. Step 2. Subtract year, month, and day; if the day is negative, borrow days from the previous month.
3. Step 3. If the month is then negative, borrow 12 months from the year — giving whole years, months, and days.
4. Step 4. Separately, take the total whole days between the dates, and multiply by 24 for hours.
5. Step 5. All figures update live whenever you change a date.

How the age is counted
