Common questions, worked out
New regime, tax year 2026-27, unless the card says otherwise. Each answer page lets you change the figures.
Tax on a ₹10 lakh salary
₹9,25,000 is taxable after the standard deduction. The section 156 rebate cancels the ₹32,500 of slab tax, and you have ₹2,75,000 of room for other income.
See the working →Tax on a ₹13 lakh salary
Marginal relief caps the tax, but ₹13 lakh still leaves you with ₹1,000 less than ₹12.75 lakh does. Take-home only catches up at about ₹13.49 lakh.
See the working →Tax on an ₹18 lakh salary
That is ₹12,567 a month. For the old regime to match, you need ₹6,41,667 of deductions, and most of that has to come from HRA.
See the working →EPF on ₹25,000 basic
₹3,000 is cut from your pay and your employer adds ₹3,000. ₹2,083 of the employer's share goes to EPS, so ₹3,917 reaches your EPF balance.
See the working →EMI on a ₹50 lakh home loan
At 8.5% for 20 years. Pay ₹1 lakh extra every March and keep the EMI: interest drops from ₹54.14 lakh to ₹34.33 lakh, and the loan ends 6 years 5 months early.
See the working →Rent paid to a parent for HRA
That is the family's real gain in a Mumbai case, against the ₹1,87,200 drop in your old-regime tax. Your parent's side of the tax counts too.
