Twitter Character Counter
Use Twitter Character Counter to hit every platform limit and size — fast and free.
Paste a YouTube link or ID and get direct links to its thumbnail at every size — max, SD, HQ and MQ — to open and save.
Your browser is preparing the tool. It runs 100% locally.
The YouTube Thumbnail Helper reads the 11-character video ID from any YouTube link or ID and builds direct links to that video's public thumbnail at four sizes — maxres 1280×720, SD 640×480, HQ 480×360 and MQ 320×180. Open a size and right-click to save. hqdefault works for virtually every video; maxres is not always available.
It turns a YouTube URL or video ID into ready-made links to that video's thumbnail images, at four resolutions, so you can open the one you need and save it.
It is a helper, not a grabber: it builds the public thumbnail links and shows a preview. The images live on Google's thumbnail servers, and you save them with a normal right-click.
It pulls the 11-character video ID out of the link — handling watch, youtu.be, embed and shorts forms, or a bare ID — then assembles the standard i.ytimg.com thumbnail URLs for that ID.
Parsing the ID happens in your browser. Showing the thumbnail loads the public image from Google's content network, the same as opening any YouTube thumbnail.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg → 1280×720 (16:9, not always present)
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/sddefault.jpg → 640×480 (4:3)
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg → 480×360 (4:3, near-universal)
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/mqdefault.jpg → 320×180 (16:9)youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ → https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/hqdefault.jpghqdefault (480×360) exists for virtually every video, so it is the safe fallback. maxresdefault (1280×720) is only generated when a high-resolution source was available — older or auto-generated thumbnails may not have it.
The video ID is parsed in your browser. To show the thumbnail, the tool loads the public image from Google's content network (i.ytimg.com) — that single image request goes to Google, the same as opening any YouTube thumbnail.
No video is downloaded and nothing else is sent. The tool only builds links to public thumbnail images, with no account or history.
| Input | YouTube URL or 11-character ID |
|---|---|
| Builds | i.ytimg.com thumbnail links |
| Sizes | maxres 1280×720, SD 640×480, HQ 480×360, MQ 320×180 |
| Most reliable | hqdefault (near-universal) |
| Network | Loads the public thumbnail from Google's CDN |
| Downloads video | No — thumbnail image only |
| Save | Right-click the opened image |
maxresdefault (1280×720) is not guaranteed — older uploads (roughly pre-2013) and auto-generated thumbnails may not have it, and YouTube sometimes serves a blank placeholder at that URL. hqdefault (480×360) exists for virtually every video, so it is the safe fallback.
hqdefault and sddefault are 4:3 and can show black bars on 16:9 content; mqdefault and maxresdefault are 16:9.
It links to the public thumbnail and opens it in a new tab — you then right-click and Save. It does not force a download, and it never downloads the video itself.
Thumbnails are the uploader's content. Use them for personal reference or fair-use purposes, not to repost as your own.
Grab a video's thumbnail to study composition or for a moodboard.
Confirm which resolutions YouTube generated for your video.
Use a video's thumbnail as a link image in a post or deck, within fair use.
Collect thumbnails to analyse what performs in a niche.
If maxres is missing, fall back to hqdefault, which exists for almost every video. To make your own thumbnail, use an image editor or the Image Resizer; to read a thumbnail's colours, use the Color Palette Extractor.
Documented against this tool's own code: it extracts the 11-character ID and builds the standard i.ytimg.com links for four sizes — so the page is honest that maxres is not guaranteed, that hqdefault is the reliable fallback, and that displaying a thumbnail loads it from Google's CDN.
