What the Pace Calculator Does

This tool turns a distance and a time into the two numbers runners and walkers care about: pace, the minutes and seconds it takes to cover each kilometre, and speed, the kilometres covered each hour. They are two ways of expressing the same effort.

It is the quick way to check how fast a run was, work out the pace you need to hit a goal time, or compare two runs on the same footing.

How It Works

For pace, the tool converts your time to seconds and divides by the distance, giving the seconds per kilometre, then shows that as minutes and seconds. For speed, it divides the distance by the time in hours. The two are linked: a faster pace means a higher speed.

So a 5-kilometre run in 25 minutes is 1,500 seconds over 5 kilometres, which is 300 seconds — 5 minutes — per kilometre, and 12 kilometres per hour. Both describe the same run, one as time-per-distance and the other as distance-per-time.

Methodology

  1. Read distance and time. Take the distance in kilometres and the time in minutes and seconds.
  2. Calculate pace. Convert the time to seconds, divide by the distance, and show it as minutes and seconds per kilometre.
  3. Calculate speed. Divide the distance by the time in hours for kilometres per hour.
  4. Show both. Display the pace and the speed together.

Pace and speed are two views of the same effort. The result assumes an even pace across the whole distance, so it is an average for the run.

  • Average over the distance — Both figures are averages across the whole distance. They do not capture how the effort varied within the run, only the overall pace and speed.

Accuracy & Limitations

The pace and speed are exact for the distance and time you enter — simple division — so the figures are precise for that run as a whole.

They are averages. A run with a fast start and a slow finish gives the same average pace as a perfectly even one, so the single figure does not show how the effort was distributed.

It uses kilometres. For miles, convert the distance first, or read the result knowing it is per kilometre, since the tool is set up in metric units.

It assumes the time is the moving time for the distance. Pauses or stops included in the time will slow the calculated pace, so use moving time for a true running pace.

Can it predict my marathon time from a 5K?
Not directly. Pace usually slows over longer distances, so a flat extrapolation overestimates. A race-prediction calculator that models that slowdown is more reliable for longer races.
Does it work for cycling or walking?
Yes. Any activity with a distance and a time gives a pace and speed. Speed in kilometres per hour is the more common measure for cycling.
