How It Works

The tool uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, which combines your weight, height and age, with a small adjustment for sex. Weight has the largest effect, height a smaller positive one, and age a negative one, since metabolism tends to slow with age. The result is your resting calorie burn for a day.

To turn the resting figure into daily needs, it multiplies the BMR by an activity factor — about 1.2 for a sedentary day and 1.55 for a moderately active one. Those multipliers account for the energy used in movement on top of the resting baseline.

The only difference between the men's and women's formula is the constant at the end. The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is the modern standard, more accurate for most people than older formulas.
