What the Average Calculator Does

How It Works

The mean is the everyday average and is pulled by extreme values; the median is the middle and resists them. When the two differ a lot, outliers are skewing the mean.

Assumptions

  • Every number counts equally — this is an unweighted average, so a value that should count more must be entered more times or handled separately.
  • Only the numbers in your text are used; words and other characters are ignored, so you can paste a mixed list.
  • The mean is shown to two decimal places; the median is the actual middle value (or the exact average of the two middle ones).
