Turn a JPG — or any image — into a modern WebP, typically 25 to 34% smaller at the same quality, right in your browser.
Your browser is preparing the tool. It runs 100% locally.
Drop in a JPG (or any image the browser can open) and it re-encodes to WebP — Google's modern format that is typically 25 to 34% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. It uses your browser's WebP encoder at quality 0.92, keeps the original pixel dimensions, and downloads a .webp file. Everything happens on your device; nothing is uploaded.
This converter takes a JPEG — or in fact any image your browser can decode, including PNG — and re-encodes it as WebP, the format Google built for the web. The payoff is size: at matching quality, WebP files run roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPEG, which means faster pages and less storage.
It draws your image onto a canvas at its original width and height, then exports WebP at a fixed quality of 0.92. The dimensions are untouched — this is a format swap, not a resize.
Drop or pick an image. It is decoded and drawn onto an in-memory canvas at its native resolution, and the tool shows you the pixel dimensions.
On download, the canvas is encoded to WebP at quality 0.92 by your browser's built-in encoder and saved with a .webp extension, keeping your original base name.
Because the pixels pass through a canvas, the new file carries no EXIF or GPS metadata — camera and location tags are dropped, which is good for privacy.
Your image never leaves your device. It is decoded, drawn and re-encoded entirely in your browser; the tool uploads nothing.
The canvas re-encode strips all EXIF and GPS metadata, so the WebP you download carries no camera model, timestamp or location tags from the original.
There is no server, no account and no stored copy. Close the tab and nothing remains.
| Output format | WebP (lossy) |
|---|---|
| Quality | 0.92 (fixed) |
| Dimensions | Unchanged (no resize) |
| Accepts | Any image the browser decodes (JPG, PNG, GIF…) |
| Transparency | Preserved (WebP supports alpha) |
| Metadata | EXIF/GPS stripped on re-encode |
| Processing | 100% in-browser |
WebP encoding here is lossy at quality 0.92, so the result is not a pixel-perfect copy. At 0.92 the difference is hard to see, but converting an already-compressed JPEG adds a second round of lossy compression on top of the first — re-encoding never restores detail the JPEG already discarded.
The image is not resized; the WebP has the same pixel dimensions as your input. The size saving comes purely from WebP's more efficient compression, not from shrinking the picture.
Browsers each ship their own WebP encoder, so the exact file size and any subtle artefacts can vary a little from one browser to another.
On a browser that cannot encode WebP (very old versions), the canvas falls back to PNG, so you would get a lossless but larger file — check the extension if the size looks off.
Swap heavy JPEGs for WebP to cut page weight and speed up load times with no visible quality drop.
Re-encode photos one by one to reclaim 20 to 30% of the space they take.
Produce the WebP variant a static site or CDN expects, without installing command-line tools.
Because it accepts any image, you can push a PNG through to a much smaller lossy WebP while keeping its transparency.
If you need a universally compatible file, use the WebP to JPG converter; for a lossless copy keep the PNG; to make the picture smaller in dimensions, use the image resizer.
Re-encodes to lossy WebP at quality 0.92 with the browser's own WebP encoder, and the canvas step strips EXIF and GPS metadata along the way. WebP runs 25 to 34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality (Google's own figure); on a browser that cannot encode WebP, the download safely falls back to PNG.
