Quick Answer

Upload an image and download favicon PNGs at 16, 32 and 180 pixels — the two classic browser-tab sizes plus the 180-pixel Apple touch icon for iOS home screens. Each size is a separate PNG. It squares the image by stretching it, so crop to a square first for a clean icon. Everything runs in your browser.

What the Favicon Generator Does

A favicon is the small icon a browser shows in the tab, bookmarks and history. This tool turns any image into the favicon PNGs you need: 16 by 16 and 32 by 32 for browser tabs, and 180 by 180 for the Apple touch icon that appears when someone saves your site to an iPhone home screen.

Each size is generated separately and downloaded as a PNG. You reference them in your page with a link rel=icon tag, and the 180-pixel one with an apple-touch-icon tag.

How It Works

Drop or pick an image. A 64-pixel preview shows how it will look small.

Use the buttons to download each size: 32 by 32 is the default, with 16 by 16 and 180 by 180 alongside. Each is drawn onto a square canvas at that size and saved as a PNG.

Everything runs in your browser; the image is never uploaded.

Generation algorithm

  1. Load the source image. Your image is read and previewed in the browser — never uploaded.
  2. Scale to the target square. It is drawn onto a square canvas at 16, 32 or 180 pixels, whichever you download.
  3. Encode as PNG. The square canvas is saved as a PNG, with transparency preserved.
  4. Download each size. You get favicon-16, favicon-32 and favicon-180 as separate PNG files.

What it generates

favicon-16.png — 16 by 16 — browser tab favicon-32.png — 32 by 32 — tab, bookmarks, shortcuts favicon-180.png — 180 by 180 — Apple touch icon (iOS home screen)

These are PNG files, not a packed favicon.ico. Modern browsers accept PNG favicons referenced with a link rel=icon tag; the 180-pixel file is the Apple touch icon, which is PNG only.

Privacy

Your image is scaled and exported entirely in your browser and never uploaded — there is no server.

The PNGs are generated on your device with no account and no stored copy.

Close the tab and nothing remains.

Standards & references

  • Favicon sizes — 16 and 32 pixels are the classic desktop-tab sizes; 180 by 180 is the Apple touch icon for iOS home screens, which must be a PNG.
  • PNG favicons — Modern browsers accept PNG favicons referenced explicitly, so a packed .ico file is no longer required for basic use.

Accuracy & Limitations

It outputs PNG files, not a packed favicon.ico. Modern browsers happily use PNG favicons when you point to them with a link rel=icon tag; if you specifically need the classic multi-size favicon.ico, this does not build one.

The image is squared by stretching it to the target size, so a non-square source comes out distorted. Crop your image to a square before generating for a clean icon.

Shrinking a detailed image to 16 pixels loses fine detail; simple, bold marks read best at favicon size. The 64-pixel preview helps you judge this.

It generates the 16, 32 and 180 sizes. It does not produce the 192 and 512 pixel icons or the web manifest that a full progressive-web-app setup also wants.

When to use it — and when not to

Good for

  • Making 16, 32 and 180 pixel favicon PNGs
  • A quick favicon from a logo or image
  • The Apple touch icon for iOS

Not the best choice for

  • A packed multi-size favicon.ico file
  • Android or PWA 192 and 512 icons plus a manifest
  • Non-square images you have not cropped

For a packed favicon.ico or the full set of PWA icons and manifest, use a dedicated favicon package generator; crop to a square first with the image cropper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes does it generate?
Three: 16 by 16 and 32 by 32 pixels for browser tabs, and 180 by 180 for the Apple touch icon used on iOS home screens. Each is a separate PNG download.
Does it make a favicon.ico file?
No. It outputs PNG files. Modern browsers accept PNG favicons when you reference them with a link rel=icon tag, so an .ico is not required for basic use; if you specifically need favicon.ico, use a dedicated packager.
Why does my icon look stretched?
The tool squares the image by stretching it to the target size. If your source is not square, it gets distorted. Crop it to a square first, then generate.
What is the 180-pixel size for?
It is the Apple touch icon — the image iOS shows when someone adds your site to their home screen. Apple touch icons are PNG only, and 180 by 180 is the recommended size.
Why does my logo lose detail at 16 pixels?
There are simply very few pixels at that size, so fine detail disappears. Bold, simple marks read best as favicons; use the 64-pixel preview to check.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The PNGs preserve transparency, so a logo on a transparent background stays transparent in the tab.
How do I add these to my site?
Reference the 16 and 32 pixel files with a link rel=icon tag in your page head, and the 180-pixel file with an apple-touch-icon link. Place the files where your HTML can reach them.
Does it generate Android or PWA icons?
No. It makes the 16, 32 and 180 sizes. The 192 and 512 pixel icons and the web manifest for a progressive web app need a fuller generator.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The favicons are generated entirely in your browser, with no server and nothing stored.
What format are the downloads?
PNG, named favicon-16, favicon-32 and favicon-180. PNG keeps transparency and is widely supported for favicons.
Can I use a photo as a favicon?
You can, but photos rarely read well at 16 or 32 pixels. A simple logo or letter mark works far better at favicon size.
Do I need all three sizes?
At minimum the 32-pixel favicon and the 180-pixel Apple touch icon cover most cases. The 16-pixel version helps on older or denser desktop displays.

References

Renders your image down to 16, 32 and 180 pixel PNGs (the classic tab icons plus the Apple touch icon) using the canvas; it outputs PNG files rather than a packed .ico, and squares the image by stretching, so crop to a square first. All local.
