What the Image Metadata Viewer Does

This reads an image's basic file facts and lays them out: the dimensions in pixels, the file size, the type, the aspect ratio, the megapixel count, and when the file was last modified. You can save the lot as a text report.

It is worth being clear about what it does not do. Despite the name, it does not parse the EXIF metadata embedded by cameras — there are no aperture, shutter, ISO or GPS readings here. It reports the properties of the file, not the photographer's settings.

How It Works

Drop or pick an image. The browser reads its file properties and decodes it to measure the pixel dimensions.

From those it derives the aspect ratio (width divided by height) and the megapixels (width times height, divided by a million), and reads the file's size, type and last-modified date.

The facts are shown on screen, and a download saves them as image-metadata.txt. Nothing is uploaded.

Processing pipeline

  1. Read file properties. The browser reads the file's name, type, size and last-modified date — locally, never uploaded.
  2. Measure the pixels. The image is decoded to read its exact width and height in pixels.
  3. Derive the figures. Aspect ratio and megapixels are calculated from the dimensions.
  4. Show and export. The facts are displayed and can be downloaded as a text report.
