What the Color Palette Extractor Does

This extracts a colour palette from a photo or graphic — the handful of colours that dominate it — as hex codes you can use in a design. It shows the eight most common colours as clickable swatches.

It works by frequency: the colours that cover the most of the image rise to the top. That makes it good for capturing the overall feel of an image, from a brand photo or a piece of artwork.

How It Works

Drop or pick an image. It is sampled at a small size for speed, and its pixels are read.

Similar colours are grouped into buckets; each bucket's pixels are counted and averaged into one representative colour. The eight biggest buckets become the palette.

The swatches show each hex code. Click one to copy it, or download the eight codes as a text file. Nothing is uploaded.

Generation algorithm

  1. Sample the image. The image is scaled down to a small version in the browser so the scan is fast — never uploaded.
  2. Bucket the colours. Each pixel is grouped into a coarse colour bucket, and the pixels in each bucket are counted.
  3. Average and rank. Each bucket is averaged into one colour, and the buckets are ranked by how many pixels they hold.
  4. Show the top eight. The eight most common colours appear as hex swatches you can copy or download as text.

Standards & references

Accuracy & Limitations

It picks colours by frequency, so the palette reflects the largest areas of the image. A small but striking accent colour may not make the top eight if it covers little of the picture.

It groups colours into coarse buckets and averages each, which is fast but not a perceptual clustering like k-means or median-cut. Two slightly different shades can merge into one bucket, or a gradient can spread across several.

For speed it scans a downscaled version of the image rather than every pixel. The dominant colours come out the same, but very fine colour detail is not sampled.

The hex codes are exact averages of their buckets. They are a solid starting palette, not a designer's hand-tuned colour scheme.
