What the Tip Splitter Does
Put in the bill amount, choose a tip percentage and set the number of people, and you get three figures: the tip in money, the total with the tip added, and the per-person share when the total is split evenly. It is the quick way to settle who pays what after a group meal.
The split is even — the total divided by the number of people. It is the same calculation as the tip calculator, presented with the group split front and centre, so the focus is the per-person amount.
How It Works
The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage, the total is the bill plus that tip, and the per-person amount is the total divided by however many are sharing (at least one). So a bill of ₹1,500 with a 10% tip split two ways gives a ₹150 tip, a ₹1,650 total and ₹825 each.
It tips on whatever amount you enter. The common convention, especially in the United States, is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so enter the figure before tax if you want to follow that. The calculation itself is the same percentage maths in any currency.
Methodology
- Read the inputs. Take the bill amount, the tip percentage and the number of people.
- Calculate the tip. The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage.
- Add and total. Add the tip to the bill for the grand total.
- Split evenly. Divide the total by the number of people (at least one).

Assumptions
- The tip is calculated on the amount you type. If that figure includes tax, you are tipping on the tax too; enter the pre-tax subtotal to follow the usual convention.
- The bill is split evenly between everyone. It does not divide by who ordered what, so an itemised split needs to be worked out separately.
- Any service charge already on the bill is not detected. If a gratuity has been added for a large group, you usually do not tip again on top.
- It uses the same calculation as the tip calculator — this version simply puts the per-person split at the centre.
- Figures are rounded to two decimals for display, so the per-person shares may not add back to the exact total by a rounding unit.
Accuracy & Limitations
The maths is exact for a flat-percentage tip and an even split. What it cannot know is whether the amount you entered is pre-tax or post-tax — that choice is yours, and it changes the tip.
It splits evenly only. If people ordered very differently, an even split may feel unfair; total each person's items separately for an itemised share.
It does not detect a service charge already on the bill. Many places add an 18 to 20 percent gratuity for large groups; if so, you generally should not add another tip — check the bill first.
Customary tip amounts vary by country. The tool applies whatever percentage you choose; what is polite depends on where you are, so set the rate to fit the situation.
